Definitional Trouble in Plato?s Early Dialogues

The first attempt to answer Socrates&apos; question in early dialogues is typically unsuccessful. This is mainly attributed to intellectual inadequacy and philosophical weakness on the side of Socrates? interlocutors, who cannot grasp the intention of the &quot;ti esti&quot; question. This paper aims to shed new light on these definitional attempts and set them in a broader cultural framework. With the example of selected dialogues, the proposed interpretation examines the relevance of the initial definitional attempts (i) within the mental scheme of their proponents and (ii) within the internal structure of the respective dialogues. First, it investigates the situational reasoning of the interlocutors embedded in oral communication practices present in a contemporary culture still influenced by the poetic tradition. In the second respect, it explores the function of these supposedly inappropriate definitions in the overall dialogical strategy. Based on this analysis, the chapter traces the complexities of the intellectual transformation initiated by the Socratic inquiry into the universals directed towards the conception of eidos/idea.
