Abandoned Rail tracks as an Opportunity for Cycling Safety: Examples from the Czech Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The Czech railway network ranks among the densest in the entire world (entire length is 9,487 km). The majority of railways were built before 1918, however. Only few of them, which form a backbone of the network, were as of 1989 modernized to allow for the fast train connections. Numbers of local tracks, particularly in rural areas and connecting small settlements, were on the contrary completely abandoned (1337.7 km). 20 rail-tracks with overall length 127.4 km (9.5 % of abandoned tracks) currently exist in the Czech Republic. Abandoned tracks are often completely removed, including embankment. Cy-cling path present one way how the old track can be utilized. We studied traffic crashes on adjacent roads before and after the respective rail-tracks openings. Results indicate significant drop of crashes as many cyclists started to use them instead of roads. Commuting a leisure-time cycling are the main activities on current rail-tracks as follows from questionnaires among users and administrators. Rail-tracks are logically separated from road traffic, have gentle slopes and asphalt pavement. The above mentioned facts mean that these communications are safe and comfortable substi-tute for roads when commuting. Number of the current rail-tracks is situated in attractive re-gions and therefore these structures are also used by tourists. Rather complicated process of conversion from railway to rail-track including unclear legislation still impedes greater utilization of this new cycling.
