The archaeology of communism
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The communist era left indelible material traces in all the countries of the former Soviet bloc. Archaeology focussing onthe communist period has shown in recent years that its methods can provide historical narratives with a detailed understandingof the original environment and spatial context and offer tangible evidence as represented by artefacts. It alsoopens up new questions related to the materiality of everyday life in the former Eastern Bloc. The social potential of suchan archaeological investigation is highlighted by the fact that the communist past still divides society in many countries, with some historical events and crimes being relativised or even denied, and tangible evidence of dark heritage is thereforegaining strong argumentative importance in competing memories. This paper raises questions concerning the archaeologicalstudy of state communism and deals with its possibilities, which result from the character of archaeological record.Presented examples include topics such as mass repressions, the Cold War and the Iron Curtain, forced relocation, collectivisationof agriculture, state atheism, armed resistance and nonviolent opposition, as well as suppression of a reformistdevelopment.
