Teachers of singing used to be and, perhaps, still are regarded as ‘charlatans’. The reason may be that they use instructions from the field of imagination and metaphors in order to help students acquire and perform various elements of singing technique. These instructions mediate and accelerate the acquisition of the required skills and habits. However, it is possible that one and the same instruction may be helpful for one student, but not for another. Therefore, the teacher must invent, seek, and explore new directions, ideas, and examples. Giving a straightforward instruction, such as: ‘Loosen your throat’, is only possible once the student has achieved a certain technical level. The educator thus has to work with imagery, bodily feelings, and other mental stimuli. For rather a long time, the educator often uses ideas, imagery, and examples from both within and beyond the field of music. The singing teacher creates a distinctive vocabulary through which he/she activates the auditory physical and emotional sensations representing the experiential self-knowledge, and forming the ‘inner life of a singer’. Our article includes information about the imagery and examples that the authors of the article used in teaching singing. Some of them are generally known, some of them are very personal, and the authors work with these expressions in their own educational practice.
