Stať přistupuje k tematice exprese z teoretického a filozofického hlediska v kontextu vzdělávání a výchovy a s ohledem na tzv. výzkum uměním. Zabývá se expresí jako specifickým způsobem poznávání světa v návaznosti na dávnou antickou tradici rozlišení dvojího poznání – noéta vs. aisthéta. Toto rozlišení vedlo v 18. století k založení badatelské disciplíny estetiky a stojí též v základech první teorie exprese od B. Croce. Jeho přístup je ve stati stručně objasněn v souvislosti s koncepcí „logica poetica“ a pojetím pravdy u J. B. Vica. V kritické návaznosti na to je popsáno novodobé pojetí exprese u N. Goodmana, který expresi vykládá jako nástroj světatvorby a jeden z hlavních druhů symbolizace spolu s exemplifikací a denotací. Na rozdíl od Goodmanova přístupu je však ve stati věnována zvláštní pozornost subjektivační složce exprese v návaznosti na tematiku tzv. adaptivního egocentrického rozhodování. Toto pojetí exprese je oporou pro výklad expresivního díla jakožto symbolické artikulace mravní maximy.

Expression as a Manner of Cognition

The paper approaches the topic of expression from theoretical and philosophical views in the context of education and with regard to so-called arts-based research. It deals with expression as a specific manner of cognition of the world in association to the ancient tradition of distinguishing between two manners of cognition – noéta versus aisthéta. In the 18th century, this differentiation lead to establishment of a research-based discipline of aesthetics and is also based on the first theory of expression by B. Croce. His approach is briefly explained in the paper in relation to the conception of “logica poetica” and the concept of truth by J. B. Vica. A modern conception of expression by N. Goodman is described in critical association to that. N. Goodman interprets expression as a tool of world making and as one of the main kinds of symbolisation along with exemplification and denotation. In contrast to the approach of Goodman, the paper pays special attention to the subjectivisation component of expression in relation to the topic of so-called adaptive egocentric decision making. This conception of expression supports the interpretation of an expressive work as symbolic articulation of the ethical maximum. In the paper, the maximum is understood, in the broadest meaning, as a determinant of the subjective will to the author’s acting determining their style, orienting judgements of their value and demanding general consent. In practice, expressive arts are confronted with traditions, public opinions, ethical standards, political power and, at the same time, with personal want and desire. Therefore, expressive creation serves as a specific tool for the examination of people’s maxima and the manners of world making in the intersection of relations between the subject and the social, cultural or natural environment. The method of such examination is described and illustrated in the paper using a particular case called the expressive experimentation.
