Im Basisartikel des Themenhefts "Geschichte begegnen" zeigen die Autoren auf, "welchen Stellenwert die Beschäftigung mit historischer Kunst bekommen kann, wenn man den Lernenden die Relevanz kunstgeschichtlicher Werke in ihrer Entstehungszeit vermittelt - aber auch ihre Aktualitätsbezüge erlebbar macht. Didaktisch begründete Zusammenstellungen aufeinander bezogener Bildensembles laden zum vergleichenden Sehen ein und befördern ein Bewusstsein für die Geschichte wie auch ein Verstehen der Gegenwart". Vor diesem Hintergrund unterbreiten die Verfasser folgende Themenvorschläge für den Kunstunterricht: (1) vergleichendes Sehen; (2) didaktische Ikonografie; (3) bildbasierte Partnersuche im Gestern und Heute; (4) Signaturen als Zeichen für den kulturellen Kontext finden und mit Signaturen differenzieren: Signatur als Forschungsbegriff, Signaturen zwischen den Bildern; (5) Körper und Habitus. Im Basisartikel wird auf die Unterrichtsbeispiele des Hefts verwiesen.

In the basic article of the thematic issue "Encountering History", the authors show "the importance that can be attached to the study of historical art if the relevance of art-historical works in their time of origin is conveyed to the learners - but also their relevance to the present can be experienced. Didactically justified compilations of interrelated picture ensembles invite comparative viewing and promote an awareness of history as well as an understanding of the present". Against this background, the authors suggest the following topics for art lessons: (1) comparative seeing; (2) didactic iconography; (3) image-based partner search in yesterday and today; (4) finding signatures as signs for the cultural context and differentiating with signatures: Signature as a research term, signatures between images; (5) Body and habitus. In the basic article, reference is made to the teaching examples in the booklet
