Translation and Own-Language Use in Language Teaching: The Quest for Optimal Practice

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The monograph reconsiders the role of translation and learners’ own language use in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom and shows prospective EFL teachers how to use the learners’ own language and translation optimally. The author draws on fundamental research in the field of foreign (especially English) language teaching and selected concepts from translation theory (especially the functionalist approach to translation). The book presents both a theoretical framework and a concrete didactic model for the optimal use of translation and learners’ own language in English language teaching (Optimal Translation Practice in English Language Teaching, OTP in ELT). Employing action research over two years (2021-2023), the didactic model was included in methodology courses for EFL pre-service teachers followed by a teaching practice block and thus verified also in the authentic EFL classroom context. The book and its research are aimed at pre-service (and in-service) teachers of English as a foreign language as well as teachers of other foreign languages. Considering its focus, this research presented in the monograph contributes thus to the field of the didactics of (English) language on the theoretical level. On the practical level, it shows concrete ways of employing translation and learners’ own language in the language classroom and suggests how to integrate this segment into (English language) teacher education programmes.
