Verbs of motion in Czech: A comparison of the determinate verb jít and some prefixed verbs of motion
Popis výsledku anglicky
The paper concentrates on the narration of consecutive events which ends with a verb of motion: the determinate verb jít ‘to go (on foot)’, the perfective verb odejít ‘to leave’ or the imperfective verb odcházet ‘to leave’. While the presence of a chain of perfective verbs is not surprising in narrative texts, in Czech it is not uncommon to find constructions with a perfective verb and an imperfective verb in coordination. The aim of this article is to characterize the contexts in which the verbs jít (with the meaning of ‘to go away’), odejít and odcházet in the last position of the sentence are used and to specify the decisive features that lead to the use of one of these verbs. Attention is also paid to the possibility, or not, of replacing the prefixed verbs with the determinate verb jít and vice versa. The research is based on data obtained from the Czech National Corpus.
