In Anlehnung an die Brüder Grimm sammelte Franz Xaver von Schönwerth (1810–1886) mündliche Überlieferungen der ländlichen Bevölkerung in der nördlichen Oberpfalz in unmittelbarer Nähe zu Böhmen. Sein besonderes Interesse galt der Beschreibung von Bräuchen und Traditionen des Lebens und des Jahresverlaufs.Dies verwischt nicht nur die Grenzen zwischen den Textgattungen „Märchen” und „Sage”, sondern offenbart auch deutliche Ähnlichkeiten auf beiden Seiten der (politischen) Grenze hinsichtlich des mythischen Charakters der Erzählfiguren.Schönwerth veröffentlichte seine ersten Ergebnisse in seinem dreibändigen Werk „Aus der Oberpfalz. Sitten und Sagen” (1857, 1858, 1859). Der Großteil seiner Sammlungen wird im Stadtarchiv Regensburg aufbewahrt. Die „Sitten und Sagen” und der umfangreiche Nachlass von Franz von Schönwerth gelten als einzigartige Quelle zur Kulturgeschichte der bayerisch-böhmischen Grenzregion im 19. Jahrhundert.

Following in the footsteps of the Brothers Grimm, Franz Xaver von Schönwerth (1810-1886) collected the oral tales of the rural population in the Northern Upper Palatinate in the immediate vicinity of Bohemia. He was particulary interested in describing the customs and traditions of life and the course of the year.This not only blurs the boundaries between the text type &apos;fairy tale&apos; und &apos;legend&apos;, but also reveals clear similarities on both sides of the (political) border with regard to the mythical character of the narrative figures.Schönwerth published his initial findings in his three-volume work &quot;Aus der Oberpfalz. Sitten und Sagen&quot; (1857, 1858, 1859). The majority of his collections are stored in the Regensburg city archives . The &quot;Sitten und Sagen&quot; and the extensive estate of Franz von Schönwerth are considered to be an unique source on the cultural history of the Bavarian-Bohemian border region in the 19th century.
