There exist several reworkings of the renowned liturgical sequence Dies Irae that have been written. The article focuses on one of them, the parody of Dies Irae from the very beginning of the 18th century that reacts to the death of Charles II of Spain and presages the beginning of a new war, later known as the War of the Spanish Succession, and above all the fate of Dutch Calvinism. The parody, of which many copies are nowadays scattered throughout Europe, was at that time a very popular text expressing hopes and fears tightly connected to Protestantism in Holland, which was endangered by the new international political situ¬ation. Since the parody has been preserved in various textual versions, the article deals first with its textual history and development; then it considers its content and tries to understand it in the context of the events of the turbulent years 1700–1702.
