A survey of High School Students’ Attitudes to Agriculture and Garden Education
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Recent international studies report rising use of school gardens in science education. One of the possible reasons for increasing garden education in foreign countries is proposed impact on the improvement of students‘ agricultural literacy and their positive attitudes towards agriculture. On the other hand, last studies in Czech Republic document limited use of school gardens in science education aimed to agricultural literacy after velvet revolution, despite of previous long tradition. This contribution brings results of a survey done among 334 high school students focussed on their attitudes to garden education and agriculture. The results showed, that despite agriculture was considered as an important part of national economy by the majority of the respondents, just a minority of students understood properly the term ”sustainable agriculture”. The respondents considered garden education as important for their knowledge of crops and crop growing. The results are discussed in relation with the use of school gardens in science education and the role of garden education for an improvement of students’ agricultural literacy.
