Reading comprehension of scientific texts and interpretation of graphs are critical abilities for achievement in science. For this reason, future science teachers’ education at universities should include, among others, the development of skills necessary for reading comprehension of scientific texts as well as proper understanding of graphs. This contribution describes the results of a survey focusing on scientific text comprehension and graph understanding conducted among first-year biology students entering the Faculty of Education, University of South Bohemia. The results show that these students lacked some skills necessary for text comprehension, especially inference skills for reading, and they have difficulties in understanding scientific vocabulary. Reading comprehension of scientific text was found to correlate with participants’ prior achievement in biology at secondary school. The participants also had problems understanding graphs, in particular recognizing relations and scale range displayed in graphs. A surprisingly weak correlation was found between participants’ understanding of graphs and prior achievement in mathematics.
