    Simple Block Programming in Microworld Based on Bebras Task - How Successful are Czech and Slovak Elementary School Students?

    Apart from a common past, Czechia and Slovakia still share a very similar language and education system. Following the example of several countries, the school education system in Czechia has been undergoing a reform in recent years. That has resulted in a shift from only teaching digital literacy in various school subjects to adding Informatics as a separate subject. In Slovakia, Informatics has been a part of primary school education since 2005. Previous research has already compared the achievement of students from both countries in 2018 based on tasks from the international Bebras Challenge. The ongoing reform has provided the stimulus to re-examine the actual knowledge of students in both countries. For this purpose, we used a specially developed software module based on the Blockly environment, which was implemented in the Czech Bebras Challenge. A series of gradual programming tasks was designed for this module, which was made available to teachers in both Czechia and Slovakia. The tasks were identical for both countries but adapted to their language. Using a sample of approximately 40,000 students, quantitative data analysis was used to examine the results of the first four tasks in the series. In this paper we focus on the performance of elementary school students (Years 4 to 9, so 9 to 15 years old students). The results show that in most school years Czech students were significantly more successful than Slovak students. In paper we describe the results and possible causes in more detail.
