Predation by otters (Lutra lutra) - a new phenomenon in Czech fishpond management
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The occurrence of otter (Lutra lutra) in the Czech Republic has been dramatically raising during the past decade. Recently, their numbers attained 700 individuals in 1999 as presented by the institutions of nature protection however 2,000 individuals arereported by the Fish Farmers Association. The most of data about otter food requirements as presented in the scientific literature concern the results of analyses utilising otter excrements for reconstruction of diet composition and quantitative data. The reconstruction of consumed fish size is usually performed using bone elements, which are ingested by otter - and thus they can appear in otter excrements only in case of smaller fish. Regarding bigger fish, otter usually consumes only soft parts likeviscera and mussels. Their rests naturally cannot appear in excrements (or better said they are undetectable), which leads to misinterpretations in presentation of otter diet composition. The maximum size of fish cadaver left by otter, wh
