Studying a foreign language for specific purposes often evokes negative emotions in the student. Learner anxiety, self-criticism and lack of confidence can lead to a phenomenon known as communicative apprehension, in which the learner becomes reluctant to attempt productive skills. Anxiety, self-deprecation, and self-doubt can all hurt student performance. This study seeks to evaluate the level, causes, and effects of learner anxiety at our institute within the University of Defence in Brno, in which our students are primarily undergoing preparations for the special language examinations for military-related personnel in accordance with NATO standardization agreement (STANAG) 6001. Our study is unique in that our students are adult employees of the Ministry of Defence. Furthermore, we hope that by helping our students identify and cope with their anxiety, they can improve their overall performance, both on the STANAG examinations and in the classroom. Finally, we hope to use the conclusions of this study to make some recommendations to our faculty about how to help students overcome their anxiety surrounding language learning.
