The Glucan Particles as Potential Carriers for Anti-inflammatory Substance Curcumin
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), a group into which mainly Crohn’s disease and ulcerous colitis belong, are commonly spread through the world. A new option for treatment of IBD by using natural products is targeted in this project. Curcumin is phenolic compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, therefore can be used as potential substance in the treatment of IBD. But it is poorly soluble in water and it has low bioavailability in organism. Hence, glucan particles (GPs) can be used as a vehicle, since β-glucan can interact with immunity system in organism. The GPs can be phagocytosed in the guts by lymphatic cells that are mostly presented in inflammation which is typical symptom for IBD. The porous GPs, containing curcumin as an active substance, can deliver their content into the targeted inflammatory area and increase its bioavailability. GPs with suitable properties were prepared from baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The loaded microparticles were prepared by mixing a solution of curcumin with GPs and subsequently removing the solvent by controlled evaporation. The anti-inflammatory activity of prepared microparticles was confirmed in vitro on macrophage-like cells and in vivo in rats. GPs with incorporated curcumin are a promising delivery system, especially for diseases connected with the immune system, and can be used in treatment of IBD in the future.
