Comparative Measurements of Total Body Water in Healthy Volunteers by On-line Breath Deuterium Measurement and other Near-subject Methods.
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Background: Accurate and rapid determination of total body water (TBW), a fundamental component of body composition, is a desirable goal in the study of physiology and the management of many medical conditions. We have developed a new breath test, usingFlowing-afterglow mass spectrometry (FA-MS) and deuterium dilution, which enables the immediate determination of TBW from single exhalations. Objective: To demonstrate the efficacy of the new FA-MS method in determining TBW in healthy subjects, and compare the results obtained with those from multifrequency bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and published regression equations. Design: Following baseline measurement of breath deuterium abundance (FA-MS), 24 healthy subjects took 0.3g/kg body weight D2O. A second breath sample was taken after two hours to measure the increase in deuterium and thus calculate TBW. BIA was carried out using a Xitron Hydra (4200). Methods were compared using Pearson correlation and Bland-Altman analyses.
