The topic of soil, which integrates elements of chemistry, biology, and geography, is often in a predominantly theoretical manner, making it difficult for students to grasp complex processes and stay engaged. Practical skills related to soil analysis are frequently overlooked in science education, and there is a lack of instructional models that combine escape games with laboratory activities.This article presents Lost in Humus, an educational escape game developed prior to this study, designed to enhance students’ practical skills through hands-on soil analysis. The game takes place in a laboratory, where students use tablets to access a digital PowerPoint presentation and solve both practical and theoretical tasks. Its development involved digital tools such as ChatGPT (for text), Freepik (for visuals), and LearningApps (for interactive activities).A pilot study conducted with two age groups of students (14 and 17 years old) focused on evaluating the effectiveness of the escape game and its implementation in the classroom. Students worked in teams, analyzed soil samples, measured pH, and decoded messages in an effort to rescue Professor Trilka Terracotta. The game was further validated by 12 practicing teachers. The results showed that the activity fosters practical skills, problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and critical thinking, while also increasing students' interest in environmental issues.
