MOBBING , PSYCHLOGICAL SAFETY AND INTENTION TO LEAVE: A PILOT STUDY IN HEALTHCARE

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Background: Mobbing is one of psychosocial risks; it is a serious and latent problem of many workplaces resulting in a psychological injury and an adverse working atmosphere. Increased staff turnover is a rather common consequence. The aim of our research was to determine the level of bullying in health professionals and the relationship between mobbing and intention to leave a job. Method: The research was designed as a questionnaire survey and took place in 2017. Participants should be employed in their job for at least one year. We used NQA-R questionnaire, sociodemographic questions and questions focused on the intention to leave a current employer. To determine the relationship between mobbing incidence and the intention to leave the Spearman`s correlation coefficient (the level of significance = 0.01) was used. Results: The questionnaire was filled in by 160 employees (113 completely, 47 partially). According to a more loose criterion (one event during the recent 6 months) 14% of respondents were mobbed, according to a more strict criterion (two or more events during the recent 6 months) 18% out of the overall number of 114 respondents. A strong positive correlation was found between the level of mobbing and the intention to leave rs = 0.674⃰⃰⃰ ⃰ . A strong negative correlation was found between the level of mobbing and psychological safety rs = -0.720 ⃰ ⃰. A strong negative correlation was found between psychological safety and the intention to leave rs = -0.577 ⃰ ⃰. Self-evaluative question was replied by 118 respondents (out of 160); those respondents stated they had not met with mobbing in their workplace. Conclusion: Mobbing may be a strong motivation factor in the intention to leave a current job. Management of healthcare professionals should create working environment restricting mobbing at work as this has a significant impact on staff turnover.
