"A thought for one here / A sigh for one there," writes the Guyanese-British author Grace Nichols in her collection Startling the Flying Fish. Her literary fame and international acclaim have crossed the borders of many a state. She is a poet of multipletalents, writing about her native Caribbean as well as about her adopted European cultural experience, about the relationship between the textual and the visual, about the cohabitation of nations and identities. The paper aims to examine the issue of nationhood and diaspora in the above-mentioned poetic sequence. Nichols uses the voice of Cariwoma, an incarnation of Caribbean womanhood, to relate stories and feelings that are uniquely Caribbean and female and yet when they transcend these values and become more global. As a consequence, the paper will look at the crossroads of identities that meet in the Caribbean in order to maintain and preserve both individual and collective cultural heritage.
