(Re)searching the criteria of academic success – an undergraduate psychology program example
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
With limited resources and a number of applicants highly exceeding available positions, a university is usually interested in the effectiveness of its admission process. To validate the admission criteria, it is crucial to first define the concept of “academic success”. In most of the available validation studies, overall or first year grade point average was used as an indicator of students’ success. Yet this conceptualization may underestimate the value of non-cognitive predictors such as motivation or previous achievements. The current study aims to investigate other viable criteria of academic success in a setting of a selective undergraduate psychology program. Preliminary results from a survey among Bachelor of Psychology graduates at a large Czech university concerning their activities prior to and during their undergraduate studies are presented. The attempt to create a self-rating scale encompassing the achievement of the programs’ study objectives as a measure of academic success is also discussed.
