Dit hoofdstuk pleit voor breder gebruik van liedjes en muziek ten behoeve van het vreemdetalenonderwijs in de moderne talen. Op basis van het doctoraatsonderzoek van de auteur met betrekking tot effectiviteit op het gebied van onderwijs Nederlands als vreemde taal binnen de regio van Centraal-Europa, dat werd uitgevoerd bij de Universiteit Utrecht beschrijft het hoofdstuk het grote potentieel van liedjes en muziek voor de FLT-doeleinden. Dit wordt gedaan door gedetailleerde beschrijvingen ondersteund door transcripties van authentieke video-opnamen verkregen in de praktijk van het onderwijs van de auteur. Deze voorbeelden tonen aan hoe belangrijk het is om studenten deels verantwoordelijk te maken voor bepaalde delen van hun eigen leerproces. Tegelijkertijd laat het zien hoe motiverend het voor de studenten kan zijn, wanneer dit wordt gedaan door middel van structureel gebruik van songs. Hierbij is wel grondig gebruik van een goed functionerend didactisch model zoals bijv. het Nederlied-protocol onontbeerlijk.

This chapter advocates wide(r) exploitation of songs and music for the purposes of foreign language teaching with regard to modern languages. On the background of the author's PhD research concerning the field of teaching Dutch as a foreign language within the region of Central Europe, which was carried out at the Utrecht University, the Netherlands, it describes the great potential songs and music have for the FLT-purposes. This is being done through providing detailed descriptions supported by the transcriptions of authentic video-recordings obtained in the author's teaching practice. These examples demonstrate how important it is to make the students responsible for certain parts of their own learning. At the same time it shows how motivating it for the students can be, when this is being done through structural use of songs. However, the profound use of a well-functioning didactic model such as the Nederlied-protocol, is indispensable.
