Given the geographical location of the Czech Republic and its ten million inhabitants, knowledge of English as the lingua franca of the globalised world is essential. However, as a result of historical political circumstances the national government has not always supported the instruction of English. The article explores the historical development of English language and studies teaching in Bohemia. It focuses on the state policy and on methods used in teaching English as a second language. It contextualizes teaching English as a second language with the preference to teach other languages such as German or Russian. In addition, the article describes the historical development of English departments at Czech universities.
