Das Buch bringt neue Einsichten über die Bauaufnahmelehre in Schmidts Architekturunterricht im europaweiten Kontext und präsentiert dabei weitgehend unbekannte Feldskizzen von den Studienreisen als außerordentliche Dokumentationsquelle für die Erkenntnis der nicht erhaltenen Baugestalt ausgewählter Objekte. Das vorgelegte Buch rekonstruiert Schmidts Lehransatz – die Einführung von Gruppenstudienreisen in den Unterricht an der Akademie ab 1861 und seine Ansichten über die Architekturlehre, zu denen Nachdruck auf Baumaterial und -konstruktion, Informiertheit über historische Fakten, das Studium von Bauwerken auf dem Weg der Autopsie nebst deren detaillierten Vermessungen und Aufnahmen, Einführung in das Studium gotischer Baupläne und die Publikation von Baurissen in der Edition Wiener Bauhütte gehörten. Schmidts in den Kontext von Bauzeichenlehre und -aufnahme an Technikschulen und Akademien in Europa eingebrachtes Konzept hat die Grundlagen zur Erforschung der historischen Architektur bis auf die Gegenwart geprägt. Der zweite Buchteil erläutert die Bedeutung der Bauaufnahmen von den Studienreisen als Dokumentationsquelle für die Erkenntnis der nicht erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Baugestalt bei ausgewählten und später regotisierten Bauwerken in Böhmen, Mähren und Oberungarn.

The book presents new findings to the Schmidt´s teaching of the architecture at the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts in the context of the teaching of the measuring of historical buildings in Europe, and at the same time presents the almost unknown field sketches from the study trips as an extraordinary documentary source to the understanding of the unpreserved appearance of selected objects. In the book is reconstructed Schmidt´s learning process – the introduction of the group study trips into the education at the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts from the year 1861 and his point of view at his teaching, whose parts were: the emphasis at the material and construction of the buildings, the familiarization with the historical facts, the study of the historical buildings directly from autopsy and their detailed measuring, the implementation to the study of the gothic plans and the publication of the plans at the Edition „Wiener Bauhütte“. Schmidt´s conception, embedded in the context of the teaching of the architectural drawing and measuring at the technical schools and at the Academies in Europe, laid up foundations for the research of the historical architecture until the present. In the second part the book clears up the meaning of the measurements from the study trips as a documentary source to the understanding the unpreserved medieval appearance of the chosen objects before the regothising activities, that occur in the Czech lands and the upper Hungary at the turn of the 19. and 20th century.
