The famous Ming dynasty novel Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase) became quite infamous for a large number of explicit sex scenes. Naturally, there must be a corresponding number of sex-related expressions in the text and one of the the most interesting is the case of this character 㒲 cái, which appears in dozens of scenes in both main editions of the novel. This chapter provides an overview of the most notable occurences of this character in the text and analyses its function in the context of the narrative of the novel. Author further introduces rare occurences of this character in other contemporary works of literature.
