Rafiq Kathwari’s *My Mother’s Scribe* is a poignant collection of poems that chronicles the life of his mother, who began to lose her mental stability during the 1947 Partition of India. Written from the perspective of her young son, who serves as her scribe, the book captures her anguish over the Partition, patriarchy, and the sociopolitical turmoil in Kashmir—the world’s most militarized region. Through letters addressed to “Prime Ministers of the World,” Kathwari’s mother expresses her aspirations for orphans in Kashmir and her struggles with paranoia and psychosis.
