Dit artikel presenteert vakvertalen als een instrument voor taalverwerving, met een focus op de taalcombinatie Nederlands-Tsjechisch en vice versa. De bijdrage schetst eerst het theoretische kader dat ten grondslag ligt aan de colleges vakvertalen, waarin technische, medische en juridische teksten aan bod komen. Vervolgens worden de belangrijkste verschillen tussen de tekstsoorten besproken, evenals de specifieke uitdagingen die vertalers moeten aangaan, met speciale aandacht voor juridische teksten. De methoden en vertaalstrategieën die tijdens de colleges worden gebruikt om de meest voorkomende vertaalproblemen aan te pakken, worden eveneens besproken. Tot slot wordt uitgelegd hoe studenten door het vertalen van vakteksten verschillende (sub)competenties verwerven die hen niet alleen helpen bij hun vertaalprestaties, maar ook bijdragen aan hun algemene taalvaardigheid.

This article presents professional translation as a tool for language acquisition, with a focus on the language combinations Dutch-Czech and Czech-Dutch . The contribution first outlines the theoretical framework that underlies the courses in professional translation, which cover technical, medical and legal texts. Subsequently, the main differences between the text types are discussed, as well as the specific challenges translators have to solve, with a particular focus on legal texts. The methods and translation strategies used in translation courses to address the most common translation problems are discussed. Finally, it explains how students acquire various (sub)competencies through translating professional texts that not only help them in their translation performance, but also contribute to their overall language skills.
