Vanaf het einde van de jaren twintig nam het aantal literaire vertalingen uit het Nederlands naar zowel het Tsjechisch als het Pools aanzienlijk toe. Enerzijds had dit te maken met het ontstaan van de nieuwe staten Tsjechoslowakije en Polen in 1918, waar nieuwe elites opkwamen die literatuur zagen als een kans om hun eigen status te bevestigen. In verband hiermee ontstonden nieuwe uitgeverijen en werd literatuur een vorm van sociaal kapitaal. In beide landen lijkt echter de oprichting van de PEN-Club rond 1925 een doorslaggevende rol te hebben gespeeld bij de keuze van de te vertalen werken. Hierdoor ontstond een soort ‘internationale canon’ van voornamelijk middle-brow Nederlandstalige auteurs. In deze bijdrage geven we na een korte inleiding een overzicht van het beschikbare archiefmateriaal, welke rol PEN speelde in de respectieve nationale literatuur en hoe belangrijk de PEN-Clubs waren voor de transfer van Nederlandstalige literatuur, aan de hand van drie casestudy&apos;s: de romans van Madelon Székely-Lulofs, van Johan Fabricius en van Jo van Ammers-Küller.

From the late 1920s onwards, the number of literary translations from Dutch into both Czech and Polish increased significantly. On the one hand, this was related to the emergence of the new states of Czechoslovakia and Poland in 1918, where new elites emerged who saw literature as an opportunity to affirm their own status. In connection with this, new publishing houses emerged and literature became a form of social capital. In both cuntries, however, the establishment of the PEN Club around 1925 appears to have played a decisive role in the choice of works to be translated. This created a kind of &apos;international canon&apos; of mainly middle-brow Dutch-language authors. In the contribution, we give after a brief introduction a survey of available archival material, what role PEN played in the respective national literatures and how the PEN Clubs wereimportant for the transfer of Dutch-language literature, using three case studies: the novels of Madelon Székely-Lulofs, of Johan Fabricius and by Jo van Ammers-Küller.
