Leo Jehne and His Contribution to Popular Music Research

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Leo Jehne (1930–1999) belonged to a generation of musicologists who helped shape popular music research in the Czech lands. Although he focused primarily on classical music during his studies, his professional career was also linked to pop music from the very beginning through his work at the Music Theatre, the foreign trade company Artia and Supraphon. His inclination towards this musical sphere was further influenced by external factors, including the emergence of pop star culture and the increased demand for theoretical reflection arising from the newly institutionalized workplace at the Institute for Musicology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in the early 1960s. Jehne focused on the issue of Czech vocal interpretation of popular music, exploring its specific characteristics as a journalist and critic, as well as a teacher and researcher. Jehne’s unique and long-standing interest in the discipline of singing and interpretation earned him the status of an expert on vocal issues and resulted in the formulation of a theoretical concept that was to serve as a basis for the evaluation of performers. This study focuses on Jehne’s relationship to popular music and traces his activities in the context of the development of domestic research based on an analysis of his published texts and other available sources.
