Syntactic Complexity in Advanced Students' Writing
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the expansion of grammatical competence, whose components also include complex syntactic structures, become of increasing importance at higher levels of foreign language proficiency.Advanced students of English are expected to demonstrate efficient control of complex structures with clear and logical clause relations, to write smoothly flowing, well-structured texts. Our students' writing, however, often does not fully manifest these qualities; students tend to use rather simple structures with a strong preference for coordinated clauses and finite verb forms. In our pilot study we analysed essays written by final year students of our bachelor English study programme and compared them with essays written by native speakers with the aim to indicate aspects of syntax in which additional teaching and practice could help our advanced learners to broaden and fine-tune their repertory of actively used syntactic structure
