This chapter gives an overview of research topics which have contributed to the discourse of art education (or education through art) in the Czech Republic and have informed the establishment of this field of study and its current form. The didactics ofart education is characterised by the specific tradition of research or theoretical works dating back to the 19th century not only in the context of the Czech Republic. The prevailing theoretical research which has a normative character (in the field ofchildren's artistic expression and its instruction, the phenomenon of creativity, or the issue of sensory perception) is now being complemented with research activities which have an explanatory character and which are focused on the analysis of the educational reality in the given field at schools. The chapter also addresses the impact art education has on the establishment of museum and gallery education in the Czech Republic.
