The paper reflects the long-term professional discussion on the functions of the social pedagogue in schools. It is based on the assumption that schools and teachers themselves are due to the fast development of society as well as science and technology subject to increased requirements in terms of the development of pupils’ personalities, knowledge, skills and competences. In addition to other things, the situation requires a more conceptual and systematic approach to preventing and addressing risk behaviour, supporting teachers’ educational work, creating a favourable climate and cooperation with school counsellors and educational counselling centres. This provides space for the social pedagogue as a possible key element of the school-based educational system. The paper focuses on the existing knowledge and studies concerning the research topic and provides space for a professional and social discussion on the functions of the social pedagogue in schools.
