This paper deals with the managerial competencies of workers in health care. Head and department nurses were the target groups in the Faculty Hospital Brno, the Faculty Hospital of St. Anna in Brno and the hospitals in Trebic and Znojmo. 2 895 respondents participated in a questionnaire research covering 1 763 nurses, 985 department nurses and 147 head nurses. Overall, the average response rate was 42.83 %. This research shows that informal relationships based on a democratic managerial style of head and department nurses predominates in all the analyzed hospitals. Nurses in management positions are quite satisfied with their managerial skills (63.1 % cases). According to nurses' statements both target groups have enough managerial skills. Head and department nurses predominantly obtained their knowledge of human resource management in their working practice and previous occupation (45.3 % respondents).
