New genetic resources with defferent beta-glucan (BG) content for breeding of food and/or malting barley varieties were developed. The conventional hybridization with donors of either a high or low level of BG resulted in materials with mostly intermediate or heterotic expression of the parameter. Although the environmental variability of the BG did not excced the genotypic one, the influence of different climatic and growing conditions was observed. Among varieties of spring barley registeredin the Czech Republic in 1998, the soluble BG content in fresh mash ranged from 106 mg.l-1 (variety Nordus) to 374 mg.l-1 (variety Pax).
