Trade liberalization and globalization of food chains lead to dramatic structural changes in agricultural and food markets in the whole world. Farmers in developing countries are increasingly challenged to compete in markets which are much more demandingas for quality and food safety, more integrated, and much more open to international competition. The article is dealing not only with changing position of agriculture in economies of developing countries, but also with changing efficiency of agriculture in these countries and structural changes in this industry. In final part of the paper are discussed the most important contributions and challenges of agriculture for development, especially in poor areas.
