Czech landscape architecture has always been associated with the Western culture and its garden tradition. Czech gardens established in the Renaissance by Italian artists perfectly assimilated the spirit and form of the Italian garden as its purest and undistorted reflection. Italian gardens became the basis of its further development. The more recent influences of Dutch gardens and French gardens are apparent in the morphology of plant details, the architecture of buildings, sometimes in the use of water, but hardly ever in the overall scale or monumentality of their composition and limitless perspective. The early forms of the English landscape garden were very close to the ideal Arcadian landscape entering the space of Czech formal gardens at the turn of the 18th century. The landscape gardens at the turn of the 19th century manifested their affiliation to the German school of sentimental romanticism as well as the German urbanism of the 19th century, which designed gardens and parks in the form of city wall rings, urban civilian parks and park systems, and anticipated the new phenomenal dimension of the landscape architecture it was about to gain in the 20th century. The Second World War, then the Iron Curtain and 40 years of the totalitarian regime, i.e. life of over two generations, brought a serious disruption of the links with the tradition and the Western culture and a stagnation of the natural development of landscape architecture in Czech lands. The landscape architecture in the West crystallized into a social art, reflecting the relation between people and nature - making it comprehensible to a human mind, as well as its beauty, comfort, recreation, physical and mental cultivation. Meanwhile, the Czech cultural tradition of the garden faded away, maybe only maintained by the academia. Three exhibitions aiming to educate the public will present the Czech garden art and its development in the European, or for the 19th and the 20th centuries even global context, reinstating the garden as a cultural environment; the garden, which has developed for hundreds or thousands of years, in the tradition that has to be learnt about, understood and renewed. Additionally, Czech gardens are presented as a part of the Western cultural heritage, which developed fully in connection with architecture and art. Understanding these contexts brings hope for the future that the nearly magical options of gardens will be used for the metamorphoses of the environment. The first exhibition consists of 32 large boards presenting the eras of the Renaissance and the Baroque in the garden culture in images. The projects of these eras affected the appearance and character of Czech cities, towns and countryside, and became a part of the Czech culture and national identity. Thanks to the feudal elites&apos; ambitions, not only gardens but also landscape complexes were designed and constructed that can be considered of global importance even in the future. The path to this goal starts with the enlivening of the Western tradition and learning about its development. Current designers - landscape architects - are expected to gain deep knowledge and understanding of the development, without which no valuable individual and original designs can be created. However, we are also facing the need to educate the general public, through schools and media, in order to raise interest in garden design and landscape architecture, leading to the comprehension of their essence and role in the life of a cultural society. Hopefully, this exhibition will be the right step and a pleasant guide towards this goal.
