Variation in the Mortality Rate of Broiler Chickens during Transport to the Slaughterhouse as a Welfare Indicator
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Transportation of broiler chickens to poultry processing plants constitutes the largest percentage within livestock preslaughter transportation in the Czech Republic and it is always connected with death losses. The mortality rates of broiler chickens inindividual shipments may serve as an indicator of the quality of welfare during loading and transport. All shipments of broilers to poultry processing plants were monitored in the Czech Republic in the period from 1997 to 2008. A total of 1,451,462,863broiler chickens were transported for slaughter in the monitored period out of which 3,625,164 birds died as a result of transportation. The numbers of broilers dying as a result of transport in individual years of the monitored period were not markedlydifferent (varying from 0.21% to 0.30%). Thus, even if stricter legal regulations aimed at improving animal transport conditions had been adopted in recent years, these changes did not result in an increase of broiler chicken welfare in t
