Název v původním jazyce
The intellectual apostolate of the Czech Dominicans during the rise of socialism, 1945– 1948
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The main aim of this chapter is to present the intellectual or, to put it more precisely, ideological struggle that authors from the ranks of the Czech province¹ of the Dominican Order and related writers waged against the philosophical system of Marxism. Their critique is placed in the context of the intellectual apostolate of the Czech Dominicans, which consisted of a broad spectrum of activities addressing the urgent social, cultural and political issues of the time. The chapter’s main focus will be on the post-war period, the years 1945–1948, which provide a unique opportunity for the examination of the political thought of the friars of the Czech province. During this period of time, Czechoslovakian society was relatively open and democratic and, despite all the legal and political limitations of that era, it was still possible to express criticism of prevailing ideological narratives. On the other hand, it was obvious that socialism and, more specifically, Marxism was the dominant ideological power, and it was necessary therefore for Catholic intellectuals to face it and cope with it.
