Johann von Neumarkt, ein bedeutender Kanzler Karls IV. und Bischof von Olmütz, widmete sich neben seinen politischen und kirchlichen Pflichten auch der Literatur. Besonders hervorzuheben ist seine deutsche Übersetzung der Hieronymus-Briefe, die zwischen 1371 und 1374 entstand. Dieses Werk, überliefert in 63 Handschriften, spiegelt nicht nur Johanns Interesse an der Erbauungsliteratur wider, sondern auch seine Begeisterung für die deutsche Sprache. Während im 14. Jahrhundert prachtvolle Codices mit diesem Text auf böhmischem Gebiet entstanden, wurde die Übersetzung im 15. Jahrhundert in den deutschsprachigen Ländern in größere Sammlungen integriert und vor allem im klösterlichen Milieu weiterverbreitet. Die Hieronymus-Briefe dienten in diesem Kontext als spirituelle Lektüre oder als Bestandteil der Ars-Moriendi-Texte zur Anleitung für ein „gutes Sterben“. Die Studie untersucht die literarischen, sozialen und religiösen Aspekte dieser Rezeption und beleuchtet die Bedeutung von Johanns Werk im mitteleuropäischen Kulturraum.

Johann von Neumarkt, a prominent chancellor of Charles IV and bishop of Olomouc, devoted himself not only to political and ecclesiastical duties but also to literature. Particularly noteworthy is his German translation of Jerome’s letters, which was produced between 1371 and 1374. This work, preserved in 63 manuscripts, reflects not only Johann’s interest in devotional literature but also his enthusiasm for the German language. While magnificent codices containing this text were created in Bohemia during the 14th century, the translation was incorporated into larger collections in German-speaking regions in the 15th century and was primarily disseminated in monastic circles. In this context, Jerome’s letters served as spiritual reading or as part of the Ars Moriendi texts, providing guidance on achieving a “good death.” This study examines the literary, social, and religious aspects of this reception and highlights the significance of Johann’s work in the cultural landscape of Central Europe.
