J. A. Comenius on Translation and Interpretation of the Bible
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The author starts his treatise with reference to Erasmus of Rotterdam as the most prominent predecessor of Comenius. Erasmus aimed at reforming the church by renewal of biblical theology, consisting in restitution of the original integrity of the biblical texts. On this basis, Comenius formulates remarkably timeless and universal principles: the translator has to read the complete text thoroughly, so that he is able to understand its sense in all details. Then he is obliged to strive for the very true translation as possible, by keeping fidelity to the original text without confusing his own fictions with the author's intentions. Comenius' principles can be related to his practical translatorial work. The author comes to the conclusion that Comenius observed his own golden rule remarkably well: the safest way is to allow God to speak in his proper way, and not to bring the sense into the Scriptures, but to derive it therefrom.
