A travers l’analyse des traductions, l’article retrace l’usage que fait Montesquieu dans l’Esprit des lois des comparaisons et métaphores mécanistes, d’une part dans l’élaboration du concept de « principe » d’un gouvernement conçu comme un « ressort », d’autre part dans la distinction qu’il établit entre la monarchie et le despotisme. En comparant une traduction anglaise, deux traductions tchèques et une traduction slovaque avec l’originale en français, l’auteure montre l’importance de l’usage de ces images mécanistes pour la théorie politique de Montesquieu. Comme ils ne prennent pas en compte le sens propre de ces images mécanistes, même si le traducteur tchèque et la traductrice slovaque rendent fidèlement les comparaisons, ils éprouvent des difficultés à traduire correctement l’usage métaphorique de ces images et ils tendent à interpréter le texte. Le résultat mène à des confusions, et l’incompréhension de but de Montesquieu aboutit même à une traduction erronée qui fausse la pensée de l’auteur.

Through the analysis of several translations, the paper aims to show how Montesquieu in his Spirit of the Laws uses comparisons and metaphors issued from mechanics, firstly in his concept of a principle of a government conceived as a “spring”, secondly in the distinction he establishes between monarchy and despotism. By comparing the French original with four translations – an English one, two Czech translations and one Slovak translation – the author shows the importance of the images drawn from mechanics for the political theory of Montesquieu. While the Czech and the Slovak translators succeed in translating the comparisons, they fail in the case of metaphors where instead of translating the text with accuracy both of them tend to interpret it. This leads to a sort of confusion and even mistakes due to the misunderstanding of the goal of Montesquieu.
