Dieser Vortrag behandelt die Produktion frühmittelalterlicher (8./9. Jahrhundert) Schutz- und Angriffswaffen in Mitteleuropa. Dabei werden historische und archäologische Quellen gleichzeitig beleuchtet. Die Produktionsorte werden auf Sitzen grundherrschaftlicher Eliten verortet, wobei auch potenziell freie Schmiede diskutiert werden. Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf der Distribution, bei der neben dem klassischen Gabentauschnarrativ Handels- und Abgabensysteme im Fokus stehen.

This lecture deals with the production of early medieval (8th/9th century) defensive and offensive weapons in Central Europe. Both historical and archaeological sources are examined in parallel. The production sites are located at the residences of manorial elites, while potentially free blacksmiths are also discussed. Another focus is on distribution, where, in addition to the classic gift-exchange narrative, systems of trade and tribute are emphasized.
