On the Genesis of Marxist Iconology: Some Observations on the Ambitious Methodological Endeavours of Czech Medieval Art History.
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The article analyses the political-ideological and methodological-theoretical assumptions that led to the emergence of the so-called Prague Marxist iconology, to which it is very difficult to find any parallels in the field of art history of the Eastern Bloc. This specific approach was formed in the circle of historians specialized in the medieval period in art history and was therefore primarily intended to serve as an interpretative tool for uncovering non-religious meanings in medieval art. The author attempts to place the genesis of the Marxist-iconological approach in the context of the methodological tradition of Czech art history, as well as to characterize the main features of this approach and its role in the science policy of the Czechoslovak socialist state in the 1960s.
