Folklore Revival Movement of the Second Half of the 20th Century in Shifting Social, Cultural and Political Contexts
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The folklore revival movement in its current meaning in the Czech Republic has its origin in the period after the Second World War when the communist party became the dominant power (after 1948) in the political system of former Czechoslovakia. The term folklore movement was used here to characterize the activities of ensembles of folk songs and dances in the second half of the 20th century, encompassing festivals, performances, competitions of staged forms of folk music and dance. On one hand, the folklore movement was an activity promoted and controlled by the political régime, on the other hand, considering the lack of opportunity for other similar activities, the folklore movement brought together people of diverse ways of thinking, creating conditions for the development of alternative ideas. This way the movement was at the same time a part of the official culture and a place of potential independent activities. Political situation in other European countries, both within the so called socialist block and outside, also had an impact on the folklore movements there. The aim of this symposium is to discuss the issue of the study in an international context with a comparison of the former communist countries and countries of the Western Europe. This comparison should provide various perspectives for considering to what extent the movement was the instrument of power and to what extent it was an opportunity to implement one´s own strategy. The attention has to be payed to folk ensembles and their specific role in a particular society.n
