Usefulness of the Pre-listening Stage from the Adult Learner's Perspective

The pre-listening stage has been an integral part of listening instruction since the beginning of CLT. However, some controversial issues have been recently raised. For example, teachers are sometimes suspected to spend too much time on pre-listening (Field 2008) or the usefulness of pre-viewed comprehension questions in testing listening is challenged (Sherman 1997). Moreover, adult students? listening needs and their perception of listening instruction have not been sufficiently researched (Graham 2006). At the Department of Language Studies at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Prague, an online survey has been carried out with 374 adult EFL students in order to learn about their opinions, attitudes, and needs regarding learning and teaching listening in the language classroom.
