Classes in this package support character sets in particular those not enlisted in IANA (www.iana.org/assignments/character-sets). This is the case of Kamenicky character set (Kamenicky encoding or JMK or KAM - tagging used on Epson matrix printers). Thepackage facilitates arbitrary modifications in mappings of these character sets w/o additional programming, as well as such modifications of other external character sets including those in java.nio.charset.spi.CharsetProvider supplied either with JVM or independently. In other words it is possible to extract the mapping from an existing character set (java.nio.charset.Charset class) and create another, usually not much different, character set (an instance of Charset with a character mapping usually not much different from original Charset class as produced in corresponding Encoder and Decoder classes).
