Research-orientated universities are generally prepared for the trend toward complex and sophisticated technologies. Integrating MSc and PhD students into research groups, project orientated education, student research projects, various competitions andprizes for student research papers and theses, etc., help to bring engineering education closer to the needs of real life. The experience of CTU in Prague gives evidence of the significant effect of a proper ratio between "classical" university educationand research work done by students, especially if the research work is carried out on some real problem from industrial practice. The most direct way to achieve this effect is through collaboration between the outside world and the academic world. In the modern world of sophisticated technologies a "research university" can play an increasing role. Ways of attracting students to research need to be discussed more intensively than ever before, not only within the academic community, but.
