This contribution shows how K(alpha)/K(beta) ratios of characteristic X-rays depend on the depth distribution of the elements. Experiments were performed on specimens made of thick substrates covered by one or two mono-elemental layers. Good correspondence was achieved between the experimental and calculated values.
