Antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties of Naucleopsis glabra (Moraceae) from Peru
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Naucleopsis glabra Spruce ex. Pittier (Moraceae), a plant used by Shipibo-Conibo ethnics in Peru for medicinal purposes, was studied for potential bioactivity. Ethanolic extract (80%) of stem bark was fractionized by Soxhlet apparatus using solvents of various polarity. The antioxidant test was assessed using DPPH free radical scavenging assay in multiwell-plates. Antimicrobial activity was tested on Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228 using broth microdilution method. The extracts were screened for in vitro cytotoxic activity by brine shrimp (Artemia salina L.) lethality assay. The ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest scavenging effect on the DPPH radical with EC50 4.25 ? 0.31 ?g/mL, as well as the strongest antimicrobial activity against S. epidermidis with MIC = 62.5 ? 2.1 ?g/mL. No toxic effect on Artemia salina was exhibited in the tests up to the concentration of 1000 ?g/mL. The brine shrimp lethality assay correlates reasonably well with cytotoxic properties of plant extr
