První část monografie systematicky prezentuje klíčové poznatky vztahující se k udržitelnosti, definuje udržitelnost a její tři pilíře (ekonomický, sociální a environmentální), mapuje roli vzdělávání v udržitelném rozvoji a analyzuje koncept Zelených škol. Výzkum mapuje obecné vnímání problematiky udržitelnosti generací Z, percepci udržitelných aktivit univerzity studenty, vnímání své vlastní univerzity ve vztahu k udržitelnosti, zapojení studentů do udržitelných iniciativ, preferované formy komunikace udržitelnosti, tón komunikace a klíčové apely, vliv sociálních sítí a influencerů a emocionální aspekty marketingové komunikace.

Generation Z and University Sustainability: Attitudes, Communication, and Messaging
Popis výsledku anglicky
This publication, developed as part of the project RVO/FMK/2024/005 – Sustainability Communication Targeted at Generation Z at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications, Tomas Bata University in Zlín, outlines the theoretical framework of the selected topic, which is subsequently applied through primary research focused on understanding the relationship between universities, their sustainability policies, and Generation Z. The primary objective of this monograph is to analyse how Generation Z students perceive the concept of university sustainability and to identify which communication elements they consider most effective in conveying these values. The initial part of the monograph systematically presents key insights pertaining to sustainability, defines sustainability and its three pillars (economic, social, and environmental), maps the role of education within sustainable development, and analyses the concept of Green Schools. Special attention is devoted to the historical development of sustainability implementation within the university context, documented through a series of international declarations and charters – ranging from the Talloires Declaration (1990) to contemporary initiatives such as the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative and the Green Deal. A separate chapter addresses the characterization of Generation Z, conceptualized herein as a cohort distinguished by high digital literacy, sensitivity to authenticity, and orientation toward social responsibility. The monograph therefore describes the media habits, information reception modalities, and responses to marketing messages within an educational environment characteristic of this generation. The subsequent part of the monograph presents findings from primary research conducted via Computer-Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) methodology in December 2024. The research maps the general perception of sustainability issues among Generation Z, students' perception of institutional sustainability activities, their perception of their own university in relation to sustainability, student engagement with sustainability initiatives, preferred forms of sustainability communication, communicative tone and key appeals, the influence of social media and influencers, and the emotional dimensions of marketing communication. | 121 The monograph confirms that Generation Z adopts a holistic perspective on sustainability, according to equal emphasis to environmental, social, and economic dimensions. Students expect universities not merely to teach sustainability but to actively implement it – from green infrastructure through transparent reporting to genuine student involvement in institutional decision making processes. Generation Z's communication preferences gravitate toward visually sophisticated and dynamic formats distributed primarily through social media platforms. Authenticity, transparency, and demonstrated alignment between stated commitments and actual practice – rather than performative gestures – constitute critical determinants of communicative effectiveness. In conclusion, the monograph provides universities and their marketing departments with specific recommendations for effective sustainability communication that reflect the distinctive value orientation and media habits of Generation Z, with particular emphasis on strengthening authenticity in conjunction with systemic institutional change. The presented monograph thus offers a comprehensive and contemporary perspective on the relationship between Generation Z and sustainability within the academic context, integrating theoretical insights from the interdisciplinary fields of sustainable development and communication studies with empirical findings that yield actionable recommendations for sustainability communication practices at universities.
